Sirtaki dance show
Sirtaki is a folk dance from Greece, a combination of slow and fast versions of another traditional Greek dance – Hasápikos. The dance and the accompanying music is also called Zorba’s dance. The name Sirtaki comes from the Greek words Syrtos, which means “drag (the dance)” and “lead (the dance)”. While dancing, the dancers put their hands on each other’s shoulders and start the performance slowly, but step-by-step the dance gradually speeds up until it reaches a frenzy with rhythm and the music.
Sirtaki’s choreography is either in a line or in a circle, with a leader at the end. There are 5 to 10 dancers in a group, but the audience can also join to create huge lines of wild dancers. This dance form is a perfect representation of the kefi, i.e. the Greek “joie de vivre” culture, and also the cohesive spirit of the mind and body.
